IAG FC compete at the EASI Cup tournament in Gottingen, Germany...

25th - 29th July 2011 9th EASI Cup in Gottingen, Germany.

Once again, IAG FC took to foreign fields as they played in their fourth EASI Cup tournament, this year held in Gottingen, Germany. This time however the team was made up primarily from the franchises at Stoke and Burnley, with only a couple of experienced "veterans" of European campaigns to show the way. Given that the team had never played together before, and that the two Burnley lads had no real experience of competitive football, IAG were always going to find the competition an uphill struggle. Despite this, the team drew their first two encounters, 0-0 with the Frankfurt side Konrad Glatt Haus, and then 1-1 with the Munich side Tagestatte Kuckucksnest, Adam Powell notching with a fierce strike. Norwegian side Kristiansand proved dour opponents in the next fixture however, scoring early against the run of play, and then pulling everyone back behind the ball to come away with a 0-1 win. Important lessons learned, but by this time the rigours of competition were catching up with the team and they succumbed 0-1 and 0-3 to AWO Trialog (Gottingen) and old foes Pro Move Graz respectively to finish the day on something of a downer.

After a days rest and recuperation however the second day of competition dawned with the team playing for places and determined not to end up with the wooden spoon. Things started well too as IAG slipped swiftly into gear beating local side IFAS 3-0 with Powell once again on the scoresheet, this time accompanied with goals from experienced campaigners Andy Mulley and Jerry Lakin, the latter with a run and fierce drive into the corner of the net. Unfortunately, injury to Lakin late on with a dislocated toe and illness striking Patrick Walsh meant some severe changes to the team with manager Pete Sayers forced to play himself in goal and Keith Rushton moving into the back four alongside the ever dependable Adam Love. Luckily Walsh made it back for the final match against the EASI All Stars, and despite going two down in the first half completely against the run of play, IAG saved their best performance for last running amok in the second half to finish 6-2 winners. Mulley scored again along with the industrious Daniel Steventon who grabbed a brace, but the star of the show was Walsh who fired an amazing hat trick. Mention too must be made of substitute Graham Rose who despite feeling a little under the weather all week, worked tirelessly for the team when called upon. Rushton too deserves mention for his poise and tactical awareness, bringing a great degree of calmness to the defence. So 16th place for the team, but a great experience for all and a determination to return and improve at future events.

Thanks also too our German hosts who made the stay unforgettable and to all our friends in Europe both old and new.
